Last Holiday

Last night we watched "Last Holiday". In this movie, Queen Latifah plays a warm, good-natured, funny, charming and open-hearted soul. Furthermore, she seems very confident and comfortable in this role. I was a little surprised at her character. I have never seen one of her movies before, however I have always gotten the impression that she plays roles that are over the top and outrageous characters. In this film, she comes across as quiet and shy. My description of Queen Latifah's role fits the whole movie equally well. It is a warm, good-natured, funny, charming, open-hearted, confident and comfortable movie.
The plot is not original nor particularly good, (it is a remake of a 1950 film starring Alec Guinness), but that does not matter, it is still a very enjoyable movie. The film was especially refreshing after the last two movies that I have suffered through (see posts below). However I believe that my review would be the same, even if I had seen different movies previously.
In my last two reviews, I commented about the pessimism in the movies. An attitude that no matter how hard you try, things will not get better. In this movie, the attitude was more of acceptance and making the best of a bad situation. Early in the movie, Queen Latifah was dealt a terrible blow. In fact, a worse blow than either of the two previous movies. After a period of panic, denial, anger and desperation, she decided to accept her predicament and to live out her dreams. The message is to live every day as if it is your last. I am not sure that this is a more realistic approach to life, but it is certainly much more fun to watch.
