Saving Face

Last night, my wife and I watched a DVD of "Saving Face". This film is a romantic comedy along the lines of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". The movie takes gentle pokes at the Chinese culture in America. Most of the movie is in Chinese (with English subtitles), however it takes place in New York. It does address some important issues (Chinese attitudes towards lesbianism and becoming pregnant out of wedlock), yet the mood never gets too intense. The film is also about generational gaps as well as cultural gaps. It plays the old world parents off of the Americanized children. The director (Alice Wu) handles all of these themes in an intelligent but not overbearing manner.

Often in the movie, you will meet a character and recognize a stereotype, but as the move goes on, you find that there is more to the character than the initial stereotype. I thought the acting was really good and it was just an enjoyable light hearted movie. I would whole-heartedly recommend this film to anyone (unlike that previous miserable movie).
