Critical Reviews and other Stories
Recently I wrote about how much I liked "Bobby", although most critics did not like the movie. I am having a hard time with that; I still think it is a great movie. About a week ago, I also talked about a consensus of "major American film critics" that is printed in the SF Chronicle every week. On a scale from 1 to 10, the average rating for "Bobby" is 4.3! FOUR POINT THREE! You have got to be kidding. Also, it is ranked 38th out of 47 movies. Sigh ...
On the other hand, the reviewer for the SF Chronicle gives the movie it's highest rating. It has comments like, "This is an audacious film. ... This is an out-of-nowhere, tremendous achievement for writer-director Emilio Estevez." Now that is more like it.
A "Bobby" story - At one point Estevez was struggling with writer's block. For inspiration, he decided to check into a Pismo Beach hotel. As he was checking in, the clerk asked him what the nature of his visit was. He explained that he was trying to complete a script for a movie on Bobby Kennedy's assignation in the Ambassador Hotel. The clerk responded that she had been in the Ambassador Hotel on that fateful night. Her story is the basis for Lindsey Lohan's and Elijah Wood's characters.
Speaking of critics, I found a website that has user reviews of hotels/resorts. It is kind of fun to read through some of the reviews. I looked up their reviews on the resort that we stayed at in Hawaii and the hotel that we stayed at in San Francisco. I strongly disagreed with some of them, but it was entertaining to read through the reviews. It is very easy to spend way too much time on at that site.
Yesterday, I went to the barber. The woman who cuts my hair, asked what I had been up to. I mentioned that we had been to Hawaii in early November. She asked what island and then what resort we had been to. I started, "the Hilton". Before I could finish the name, she excitedly burst out "Waikoloa Village!" Turns out she has been twice to the resort and LOVED it. Her best friend was engaged to the resort manager. She went to visit her friend and got to stay in this fabulous room. She was so blown away by the room, that she went down to the front desk and found out that the room normally costs over $900 per night! Plus she was able to charge all her food, her drinks and everything else at the resort. Not a bad way to visit the resort. The second time she went, Pepsicola was holding it's 100 year anniversary party at the resort. Her best friend's fiancee was able to get them into the party and front row seats for the band performing at the party. She was 10 feet away from Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones!
