Swiss Teams

On Tuesday night, I went to the SC Bridge club and played in a Swiss Teams event. Swiss Teams is an event that has teams of four players competeing against other teams. It is a fun change of pace from the normal 2 people teams. We were a team that came together at the last minute and none of us had played together before. We did not do very well (10th out of 14 teams), but we had a good time.

One of my teammates told us a story about how she recently went to Italy with her daughter. They were staying in Rome and decided that they wanted to take a day trip to Florence. The first day in Rome, her daughter had her purse stolen, so they left their purses in a safe in the hotel while they went to Florence. They took the train to Florence and had a nice day exploring the city. A little too nice a day and they ended up missing the last train back to Rome. They went to a hotel and found that they could not get a room without their passports, which they had left in their purses. In fact, no hotel would give them a room without a passport. The hotels would not even let them stay in the lobby. They went to the train station and found that people were sleeping all over the station. They ended up "sleeping" on cold stone benches in the park. My teammate said she did not get much sleep that night. I find that so sad, a 71 year-old woman reduced to sleeping on a stone bench in the park, because she left her passport in Rome!
