Why Can't I Lick My Lips?
Yesterday, Ben and I were watching a World Cup Soccer match. After the match completed, we were sitting around talking. We did not pay much attention to what was on TV. After a little while, we noticed that the TV channel had changed to the World Championship of Dominos. At one point, there was a pause in our conversation and we started watching the match. It was insane.
I don't remember the names of the competitors, so I will call one team Popeye and Brutus and the other team will go by Bert and Ernie. Note that all of the competitors are adults, however the names will give you an idea of the level of maturity of the competitors. Anyway the match is going on and it is Popeye's turn to play, he slowly plays his domino and glares at Bert. When his next turn comes up, Popeye again slowly plays his domino and this time glares at Ernie. He continues this behavior to the end of that game. After the game, one of the referees steps in and cautions Popeye. He tells him that it is unsportsmanlike and that he must stop. Popeye is livid. He does not like the way that Bert and Ernie have been placing their dominos on the board. Bert shrugs and shoots back, "What do you mean, we are just placing our tiles on the table? What is wrong with that?"
So finally, the referee gets everyone settled down and play resumes. Towards the end of the next game, Bert and Ernie both explode. They do not like the way that Popeye is licking his lips. Popeye throws his arms into the air and replies "I am just licking my lips, what is wrong with that?" Brutus dives in "Did you ever consider that he might just have dry lips?" This time Bert is livid "No one has dry lips all afternoon long!" By now both referees have jumped in to calm down the combatants.
After a short pause, the next game begins. By the end of the game, when Popeye makes a play, he very slowly puts his domino on the table and slowly and elaborately licks his lips! After the game, everyone explodes! Bert and Ernie threaten to leave the match. Once again the referees settle everyone down. (Remember that this is a game of dominos not pro wrestling.)
So now we are entering the final game. It is getting pretty tense. The match is winding down and Popeye takes his time over a key decision. He has three dominos that he can play and the match depends on him selecting the right one. All of a sudden Bert and Ernie burst out laughing. Popeye leaps up, points at Bert and Ernie and screams, "You won't let me lick my lips and you let them do this!"
Later, I find out that Popeye thought that Bert was sending a signal to Ernie, by the way that he was placing his dominos on the table. Something like "If I put down my domino a little crooked, then don't play your 3." Ernie and Bert were indignant that they were being accused of cheating. Furthermore, Bert was convinced that Popeye was sending a signal to Brutus by licking his lips. And it went downhill from there.
