Academy Awards - Best Actor

Actor in a Leading Role

* Javier Bardem in “Biutiful”
* Jeff Bridges in “True Grit”
* Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network”
* Colin Firth in “The King's Speech”
* James Franco in “127 Hours”

I have not seen Bardem in Biutful or Franco in 127 Hours for different reasons. Biutful just came out in San Francisco and is not out in Santa Cruz yet. We are in February and it has not even opened in town yet! And it is nominated for a 2010 award ... sigh ... Automatically loses my vote!

As far as I can tell 127 Hours is about a guy cutting his arm off. Why would someone make a movie about a guy cutting his arm off? Why would someone want to go see a movie about a guy cutting his arm off? Why should a movie about a guy cutting his arm off get a award nomination? Why would someone vote for a guy cutting off his arm? Not me! Of course, I have not actually seen the movie, so I could be way off base on my criticism. :-)

Anyway, on to the movies that I have actually seen. Jeff Bridges gave a great performance in True Grit. But it did not seem like a huge stretch. Bridges seems to play a lot of alcholic characters with gravelly voices. But he did a fine job anyway.

For some reason, I was not so impressed with Jesse Eisenberg's performance in The Social Network. I think it is because I have been working in high tech for 30+ years and I see characters like him all the time. On the other hand, I have read of critic's fascination with the nerdy portrayal. Hmm, maybe I need to get out more and spend more time with non-techies?

Colin Firth also gave a great performance in The King's Speech. He plays royalty with an extreme speech problem. Its kind of funny, I have no idea how accurate the portrayal is. I have never been around a person with an extreme speech problem and I don't think I have ever seen how royalty acts in private situations. I have seen royalty at events, but never in personal interactions. Having said that, I have heard that some speech problem experts have said that Firth's portrayal was accurate.

In the end, I think Bridges and Firth are pretty close for this award. I am not sure how to pick, I enjoyed both of their excellent performances. I suspect that Firth will actually win the award. I think he deserved it last year for A Single Man and I think he will get the award this year.
