January 25, 2010 - Solo round at Delaveaga
Wow, another great day on the disc golf course. I am not sure what is going on, my playing has taken a jump forward over the last week. This morning was a practice round where I was throwing multiple drives on many holes. Sometimes, I would take the best drive, sometimes I would play the first drive. The overall score was very good, but I don't really count that since I was throwing multiple drives. I went back and looked at my score and discovered that I had my best drive ever or tied for best drive on 11 of the 24 holes that I played! I looked back at my score at Aptos on Sunday and I had my best drive ever on 9 of 18 holes!
I am not sure why I am seeing the sudden improvement. It might have something to do with the 2 week layoff. Maybe I needed to get away for a bit. On the other hand, I felt like I was starting to throw better just before the break, so maybe the improvement was coming anyway. Recently, I have been focusing on developing more arm speed. Not from my arm pull, but more from twisting my hips and shoulders faster. Before, I had been concerned with developing a smoother, cleaner release. Now I feel like I have a pretty smooth clean relase, so I am now working on arm speed.
Once my improvement starts leveling out, I want to experiment with reaching back farther and adding a few steps to my run up. My current technique has a relatively short run-up and reach back before throwing. As long as I can keep my release smooth and clean, than a longer reach back and a longer run up should help add distance.
Before the break, I was interested in developing a left-hand backhand (LHBH) throw. Now, I am backing away from this. At some point, I would like to play with it, but I think it is more important to keep developing my right-hand back hand (RHBH) throws. The last thing I want to do is lose the sudden improvement that I have just seen.
