Oregon Vacation - August 2010
Barbara and I went to Oregon for our summer vacation this year. And we had a blast!
This year, we drove up to Portland. We wanted to have our car and wanted to save the expense of the air fare and a car rental.
We stopped in Ashland the first night. We really like to visit this town. No, we did not go to a Shakespeare play. By the time we get to town, we are usually tired and don't feel like going to a play, we would much rather swim in the hotel pool, have a relaxed dinner and explore the downtown area. Ashland has a very nice downtown park called Lithia park. Ashland Pictures.
On the second day, we stopped in Eugene on the way to Portland. We drove around the university and stopped to have lunch in one of my college hangouts. Of course, we also stopped at the Bookstore to pick up a few UofO souvenirs.
We spent the next four days in Portland, mostly visiting relatives. We stayed with my brother, sister-in-law and nephew. We also saw my mother, an aunt and uncle and various cousins. We also had a chance to have dinner with a couple that we knew from Santa Cruz. I worked with the guy while at Nokia and they have since moved to Portland.
I did get to play a couple of rounds of Disc Golf with my brother and my nephew. They have some really nice courses in Portland and we had a good time throwing the discs around.
On our next to last day in Portland, we went downtown and visited the Chinese Gardens. It was quite pretty and informative. Chinese Garden Pictures.
Next we traveled to a resort outside of Redmond, Oregon called Eagle Crest. Again, a chance to visit with a bunch of relatives. We rented a big house that could fit all 10 of us. Eagle Crest Pictures.
On our final full day at Eagle Crest, we visited Smith Rock and Crooked Canyon. Smith Rock is a well known rock climbing area. Crooked Canyon is a steep canyon with a pretty river running through it. All in all, we had a great time. It was great to see all of the family. The weather was beautiful and Oregon is gorgeous this time of year.
