"North Country" Movie Advice

Advice to people considering viewing the movie "North Country": Do not fall asleep in the last third of the movie! :-) Or, if you slept through the last 40 minutes of the movie, go see it again.

Yesterday, my wife and I decided to watch this movie at home. The last few nights, I had not been sleeping well and was really tired when we started. About an hour-twenty into the movie, I fell asleep and woke up during the last scene. (Luckily, I woke up in time to see the Ducks basketball game that I described in a previous post. I would have been really disappointed if I missed the game!)

At that point, I was not that impressed with the movie. It was ok, but nothing special. I thought Charlize Theron and Frances McDormand were just ok. I could not understand how they got nominated for Oscars?

It could be that I was not in the mood to see repeated examples of sexual harrassment. I will never be in the mood to see that! I have read that some people think this is a good movie for men haters. Instead, I would suggest that this is a good movie for everyone who hates sexual harrassment. An aside: I am really sensitive to acts of sexual harrassment that make all men look bad. It makes me really angry.

I know several people who think the movie is really good, so I thought I would watch the last 40 minutes of the movie today. It was like night and day. The acting seemed so much better and the story just seemed to come together. I found the ending to be very moving. Now I think the movie is really good, not oscar worthy, but really good.

I have no problem with Oscar nominations for best actress and best supporting actress. I would also like to point out that the movie had a strong supporting cast with Woody Harrelson, Sissy Spacek and Richard Jenkins.

Warning: Beware, there are scenes of violence and sexual harrasment throughout the movie.

Yeah, your review was one of the reasons that I decided to go back and watch the end of the movie.
